Mystery 7
In Situ – Free University

2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture is partnering with the University of Patras to launch and run the Free University of Elefsina – IN SITU, an initiative designed for the citizens of Elefsina and its environs.

The aim is to cultivate freedom of thought in broad and varied sections of the public – socially diverse groups across a range of ages and educational levels – and to provide them with access to science-based knowledge. This educational programme has been developed specifically to address the necessities of day-to-day living in the area – such issues as relationships, communication, mental attitude, wellbeing, the environment, the arts, and so on – as well as the need to deepen cultural roots in the area by means of the European Capital of Culture initiative. The goal of this educational project is to help improve the daily lives of its students through their personal development. The Free University of Elefsina – IN SITU is addressed to all those interested in advancing themselves via a unique learning experience. Classes explore two key topic areas closely linked to the city of Elefsina – a) the Environment and Healthcare, and b) Cultural Policy – and utilise a range of educational methods (talks, seminars, experiential workshops, and walking routes) implemented in situ across a variety of city spaces.

Labor
The thematic axis of the artistic programme titled Labor explores the past and the present of work, the common European challenges of precariousness and the model of a contemporary sustainable economy, focusing on the pioneering linking of art with fields such as industry, science, technology and social innovation. Thus, it addresses another important feature of European cultural heritage, industry, which has been the basis of Europe’s development in the last few centuries. The thematic axis creates synergies between artists and businesses in various sectors as well as between artists and scientists, through three themes/notions: “The Future Starts Here”, “Culture My Profession/Culture My Hobby”, “Capacity Building and Applied Innovation Centre”.
