Beginning in the 1960s, Munich was the arrival point of migrant workers from all destinations, and from there the “migrants” would be transported to their next unknown destinations. They had no say in where they would end up. In many cases, families were torn apart. Their new destination was a temporary camp where they were medically checked and behaviourally tested. From there, the factory was the beginning of their new lives.

As Far As My Fingertips Take Me is an encounter through a gallery wall between an audience member and a refugee. Their arms touch without seeing each other. The refugee will mark the audience by drawing on their arm. The audience will listen to those who have recently challenged border discrimination. The marking can be kept or washed away.

Neighbourhood food concept arises as different smells reach a stranger when she or he walks in a neighbourhood, just like Synikismos. We all are fascinated by different recipes, smells, spices that we simply know without wondering where they come from. How did they arrive? Who brought them? Who keeps them alive? Why having food that makes us feel good is so important? Because favourite food brings back unique memories. Because taste has memory.

Klidonas / The fires of Saint John
In the neighbourhoods of Eleusis, until the mid-nineties, on the eve of the Nativity of John the Baptist, both children and adults were experiencing the custom of Klidonas by jumping over large fires in which the May Day wreaths were burnt.
Guided tour at Alfredo Romano “Openings-Mendings: Eternity is the opposite of extinction” exhibition
Eleusis 2021 proposes two guided tours at the solo show of Alfredo Romano, “Openings-Mendings, Eternity is the opposite of extinction” at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Eleusis “Leonidas Kanellopoulos” (Dragoumi 37):
1.On Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 6 and 7 p.m. from Eleni Riga, Director of Contemporary Art.
2. On Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 11 am and 12 pm from the artist himself, Alfredo Romano. The participation is for free. However, due to the limited number of places, booking in advance is required. Bookings can be made either by e-mail at eleniriga@eleusis2021.eu or by calling the following number: 210-5547646. For phone bookings, you may call from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 11:30.
Researchers’ Night – Pre-event
For the first time in Eleusis, on the 25th of September 2018, between 6:00-10:00 p.m. at the old canteen at the waterfront of Eleusis, a special event of science and technology is organised within the “Researchers’ Night”. The event is collaboratively organised by the Research Centre “Athena”, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture, the Environmental Education Centre of Eleusis and the Industrial Educational Museum of Lavrion.

Initiator
Initiator is an international artist-in-residence programme focusing on installation art, giving the opportunity to emergent artists, who have graduated from Schools of Fine Arts in Greece and abroad, to conceive an artwork and experiment with small scale installations, under the guidance of experienced artists and curators.
