Open Call: Capital Connections – Empowering artists & professionals of performing arts

2023 Eleusis, European Capital of Culture in collaboration with Busart and the international network for cultural mobility “On the Move” presents the Mystery 58 Capital Connections, a project for modern performing artists and professional support in the field of international collaborations and dramaturgy. 15 Greek organisations or/and artists of performing arts will have the opportunity to receive personalised mentoring by Kelly Diapouli and experts from the international network for cultural mobility On the Move, one year durated aiming to initiate or boost their presence in the global scene. At the same time five more artists will have the opportunity to start a similar mentoring process in the field of dramaturgy with Alexandros Mistriotis aiming to complete an artwork.

Connection with the European scene

What is it that we call the “European” or “international” scene? In fact, the European scene consists of several hundred thousand artists and institutions who live and create in hundreds of cities from Iceland to Estonia, from Portugal to Bulgaria, from Cyprus to Sweden, etc. Most of them face similar challenges in their attempts to know what lies beyond the geographical boundaries of their cities or countries.

Through the open call, 15 artistic institutions or artists from all the spectrum of modern performing arts (theatre, dance, puppetry, modern circus, performances in public space, performances of participatory art e.t.c.) will be selected in order to attend personalised counselling and mentoring process by Kelly Diapouli and experts from the International Network for cultural mobility On the Move, lasting one year.

Priority will be given to institutions, artists and professionals at the beginning of their attempt to outreach their activities to the abroad, to independent bodies and operators active in the Region. The project addresses active artists and professionals and not to students and amateurs. Its main goal is to empower artists and institutions that have embodied -or are willing at- international collaborations on a permanent basis and not only for a single project.

Dramaturgy

An intensive discussion around dramaturgy takes place internationally, as it is not unrelated to the fact that we are going through an era that is plagued by continuous and deep crises and as a result we have to recount everything without taking anything for granted.

Capital Connections project aims to support Greek performing artists (directors, choreographers, puppeteers, liveartists) in the development of their work, through an extensive process of counselling in dramaturgy by Alexandros Mistriotis.

Five artists will be selected to start the mentoring process, through private meetings with Alexandros Mistriotis, in order to complete an artwork. The proposal may concern a small, medium or large scale project, while there is no restriction for its type and form: theatrical, contemporary dance, site-specific works, circus, and so on. The process lasts a year.

The main objective of the project is the development of the personal artistic language of the participants through a methodical dialogue. Qualities such as boldness, willingness to dialogue, personal research, adventure and ultimately to shifts seem more than welcome.

Priority will be given to artists who are now in the process of shaping their personal language, i.e. either emerging artists, or artists with a path who are in transition along the way and are trying to redefine their vocabulary and artistic identity. In any case, the invitation is addressed to current artists and not to students.

Practical information

On the Move provides individual sessions of maximum 10 hours including coordination with external resource-persons for additional individual sessions. Busart provides a monthly individual session of 3 hours of counseling each participant to formulate his/her project.
