Mystery 7 Free University of Elefsina In Situ - Second Circle

The Mystery 7 Free University of Elefsina In Situ, organized by the 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture in collaboration with the University of Patras, continues in September, an innovative educational programme mainly addressed to the residents of Elefsina and the surrounding area, with on-site teaching sessions taking place both indoors and outdoors in the city.

The first cycle of courses took place in the spring, in the months of March – June, while the second cycle will take place in the months of September – November. Several courses were held in Situ, in suitable for each learning unit places of Elefsina and the surrounding area, where the name of the University comes from. The educational programme focuses on Elefsina and the surrounding area, and is divided into two strands, “Environment and Health” and “Culture-Cultural Policy”. The courses, which can be attended by those who are already registered and those who have not yet registered, will be held this semester at the Elefsina Labour and Social Centre.

The start of the courses will take place on September 11, at the Elefsina – West Attica Labour and Employment Centre (E.K.E.D.A.), at 17.30, with a speech by Sophia Rizopoulou on “Romantic Landscapes: A Tour of Landscapes of Desire, Love, Mercy and Destiny on the Occasion of “Hypnorotic Struggle”. This speech will open the “Environment and Health” session.

This speech will inaugurate the “Environment and Health” session, in which Dimitris Theodossopoulos, Georgia Mandilara, Michael Leotsinidis, Apostolos Veizis, Panagiotis Dimopoulos, Margarita Arianoutsou, Anastasia Koutsolioutsou, Ioanna Vicha, Apostolos Vandarakis will give speeches, while the topics to be discussed are the following: “The streams of Elefsina – Tracing the paths of water in Elefsina from antiquity to the present day”, “Health and food safety”, “Chemical agents in the environment and their effects”, “Sensitive population groups. Inequalities in the role of the environment in health”, “Climate change and impacts”, “Fires and regeneration in the forest ecosystem”, “Environmental monitoring of wastewater”, “Bioethics”, “Lifestyles after cancer”.

At the same time, the session on “Culture – Cultural Policy” will also take place, with speakers Michael Marmarinos, George Skianis, Dio Kaggelaris, Kelli Diapoulis, Leonidas Embiricos, Iris Tzahili, Erato Koutsoudakis, Konstantinos Moraitis, Christos Papamichael, Nikos Belavilas, Ioli Viggopoulou, Savvas Michael, Georgios Pavlopoulos, Nikolaos Karachalis.

The topics expected to be presented during the semester are: “The role of festivals and mega events in the development of the city”, “The presence of the Arvanites in Greece”, “Clothing as a trace/mark of culture and history”, “Elefsina as a Raw Museum”, “When European travellers came to Elefsina”, “Inclusion – Accessibility of sensitive population groups in the cultural life of the place”, “Elefsina and the Moderns – Philosophy, Poetry, Revolution (Hegel, Holderlin, Marx)”, “Review of the industrial development of Elefsina”, “Elefsina through its historical buildings”, “The interaction of place, nature, art and history in the city”.

During this second semester, the presentation of the work of the students of the University will also take place. The Free University of Elefsina – InSitu has also invited a meeting and cooperation session of the Free Universities of the country.

Labor
The thematic axis of the artistic programme titled Labor explores the past and the present of work, the common European challenges of precariousness and the model of a contemporary sustainable economy, focusing on the pioneering linking of art with fields such as industry, science, technology and social innovation. Thus, it addresses another important feature of European cultural heritage, industry, which has been the basis of Europe’s development in the last few centuries. The thematic axis creates synergies between artists and businesses in various sectors as well as between artists and scientists, through three themes/notions: “The Future Starts Here”, “Culture My Profession/Culture My Hobby”, “Capacity Building and Applied Innovation Centre”.

2023 Eleusis supports the project «Open Station – Open Community» organized by the youth team of Cultterra, as part of Mystery 66 Voices in the city, every Thursday from 12 September to 19 December at OSE – Elefsina Old Railway Station.
