The theme of the upcoming three-year research cycle is “A Voice to Women”.
How is the role of women presented through ancient Greek tragedy? What is the relationship between women and power? Was there a #MeToo movement in antiquity? How did the “marriages” of Zeus or other gods with mortals end? Do all women share the same fate? Starting with Euripides’ Ion, we will explore women’s issues in antiquity, the origins of misogyny, mythological references, and depictions of women in ancient drama.

As part of this year’s summer school activities, we present works about women or invite women creators who have written and continue to write their own history, raising their voices and stature in a numb and often hostile world. The series of events will include theatrical performances, concerts, dance performances, lectures, screenings, and a Karagiozis shadow theatre performance by the Athenian shadow theater troupe of Athos Danellis.

A few words on the Attiko School

It was 2012 when the city of Eleusis first welcomed the idea of creating a school dedicated to the teaching and practice of ancient Greek drama. From that point on to the present day, the Attiko School has kept its finger on the pulse of the city, teaching, learning and growing as an institution.

Over the past twelve years, the program has assembled valued friends and collaborators, supporters, believers and devotees, collaborating with major universities and institutions in Greece and abroad, contributing to the creation of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports’ International Network of Ancient Drama, and carving out its own path in the cultural life of the city. The summer school’s cultural contribution has also been cemented by its establishment as a legacy programme within the framework of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture.

It is with the same dedication and drive that we continue to provide the city and its inhabitants with a school open to all, a place for learning, unity and creative expression, a school worthy of the city that was, is and will remain a cultural capital for both Europe and the wider world.
