Mystery 40 9th Attiko School of Ancient Drama

The 9th Attiko School of Ancient Drama takes place online, from the 1st to the 10th of July 2021, through the platform estage.gr, organized by Baumstrasse (Road with Trees) and with the communication support of Eleusis 2023 European Capital of Culture.

Launching the three-year program on the subject of Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy, which is entitled “Notes Towards a Pandemic Orestes”, the 9th Attiko School of Ancient Drama opens with a recorded performance of Jean Paul Sartre’s The Flies, presented in a new translation by Nikoletta Frintzila. The performance is shown in three parts.

In the ten-day program of the 9th Attiko School of Ancient Drama, the audience have the opportunity to watch a series of theatrical and musical performances and cinematic tributes, such as the musical performance MEDEA — A Song, which closes the cycle “Love in Greek Tragedy”, the videotaped performance of Prometheus Bound by the group Road with Trees from the Old Oil Mill, as well as the films “Notes Towards an African Orestes” by Pier Paolo Pasolini and “Lord of the Flies” by Peter Brook.

In addition, the masterclasses in the form of an interview entitled “Meetings” have a special place in the program. In these interviews, a student meets their teacher to discuss art, life, methodology, education and so much more, sharing all the valuable kernels that result from their meaningful connection. The participants of the “Meetings” are: the actress, director and theatre instructor Roula Pateraki, the actor and director Akillas Karazisis, the dancer and choreographer Linda Kapetanea and choreographer Jozef Frucek, the great singer/songwriter Savina Yannatou, the vocalist and musician Marina Satti with Erasmia Markidi and Elena Leoni from her group “Fones”, the composer and set designer Vassilis Mantzoukis, the dramaturg and director Georgina Kakoudaki and the great master of shadow puppet theatre Athos Danellis, in a heart-to-heart talk with young dramaturg and puppeteer Nikolas Tzivelekis.  Professor and President of the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Athens Iossif Vivilakis will be talking about the presence of the gods in the works of Aeschylus, and Martha Frintzila will be giving a lecture on the role of the Chorus in ancient Greek drama.

Finally, the 9th Attiko School of Ancient Greek Drama will offer 15 scholarships to residents of Elefsina who are interested.

All the events will be available on the estage.gr platform from their premiere until 10th July at 23:59.
