2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture in cooperation with the World Human Forum and the support of the Municipality of Elefsina presents the lecture of historian Maria Efthymiou entitled “Key Points in the History of Hellenism” which will take place on Wednesday 4 December at 16:30 at the Cine Eleusis. A lecture dedicated to the long course of Hellenism, from the Mycenaean period to the modern era, highlighting its timeless presence, its cultural influence and the historical conquests that shaped its identity.
During the lecture, the main pillars of the history of Hellenism will be analysed, with emphasis on the diffusion of the Greek presence and language in the eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Adriatic Sea and southern Italy, as well as the development of shipping, which was a catalyst for the expansion of Hellenism beyond its geographical borders. It will also interpret points of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods that shaped its historical path, as well as points of modern history, highlighting the conquests of the Hellenic state.
