On Saturday, September 24 & Sunday, September 25, 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture inaugurates a model institution and one of the key legacy actions of the 2023 Eleusis programme, while activating the former camping site, OASIS. Mystery _50 Ecoculture Festival^, the first ever organized in the city and the wider area, is a two-day celebration, which draws its theme from the environment, ecology and sustainability and includes workshops with the participation of scientists and researchers on the history and contemporary reality of Elefsina and the surrounding areas, artistic events and parallel activities, such as walks in the city’s neighborhoods, workshops for children, picnics with music by local DJs and music groups, guided tours, cycling routes and gastronomic meetings. Admission is free with seat (pre)reservation.

Specifically, the first experimental edition of the Ecoculture Festival^ will feature the Ecoculture Dialogues, a series of diverse and interesting discussions on sustainable innovation and the agri-food sector, while children ages 8 to 14 will have the opportunity to attend Mystery_46 ModularGardens,a gardening workshop, which combines gardening with new technologies. Various parallel activities complement the Festival’s programme, such as the 2023 Eleusis Open Farm Days with more than 15 local farms welcoming the general public and presenting their products, cycling routes through the city and on the train tracks (railbiking), screenings of films and documentaries about the environment, as well as a picnic with music by local DJs from Eleusis and the surrounding area.

Furthermore, Mystery_38  Music from the Houses,under the directorial curation of Georgia Mavragani, will take place on September 24, which involves on-site tours in the Pontian settlement of Elefsina with selected music flowing into the public space through the doors and windows of the houses. This will be directly followed by Mystery_49  Symposium #2 – Black Sea,an experiential journey around the flavors and customs of Pontos, with a main focus on cultural exchange and the promotion of the gastronomic culture of the place, in cooperation with the Pontian Association of Elefsina “Nea Trapezounta.”

Ecoculture Dialogues

Roundtable discussion and dialogues at the OASIS site, with a central focus on the mapping of the main environmental characteristics of Elefsina and the challenges it faces. The aim is to seek educational, productive, artistic and design practices for an integrated cultural strategy as a means to enhance the city’s environmental sustainability. 11:00 – 13:00 Module A: The Environment of Elefsina – A Mapping

Through the identification of the environmental characteristics of the city, an attempt will be made to highlight its environmental problems, mainly those related to the over-concentration of industrial production in combination with climate change, but also to the configuration of the built environment (environmental degradation, deterioration of the quality of natural resources) and the strategies available for their improvement or reversal. Moderated by Kostis Grimanis, Climate and Energy Campaigner | Greenpeace Greece.

13:15 – 15:00 Module B: Environment and Health – Elefsina Open University IN SITU

The first event involving the presentation of the action Mystery_7  Elefsina Open University IN SITU. 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture proceeds with the establishment and operation of the action, in collaboration with the University of Patras. The programme of the new institution, which will be operational at the start of 2023, will mainly be addressed to the residents of Elefsina and the surrounding areas, and is developed around the critical themes of “Environment & Health,” and “Cultural Policy.” Its aim is to cultivate free thinking and provide a high level of scientific knowledge to a large and diverse audience, in terms of age, social or educational background. Moderated by Apostolos Vantarakis, Professor at the University of Patras, with brief remarks from Michail Marmarinos, General Artistic Director of 2023 Eleusis.

16:00 – 17:45 Module C: Agri-food Sector – Sustainable Practices

The promotion of Elefsina as a sustainable cultural and agri-food destination, with roots in time and space, through the gastronomic tradition of the region. Through the reflection of ancient myths up to the modern Mediterranean and Greek Diet, this module will attempt to highlight the need for a transition to a new sustainable agri-food culture, with a positive environmental footprint, regenerative, agroecological production practices and conscious consumption. Moderated by Panagiotis Papadopoulos, co-founder of Med Culture & Open Farm.

18:00 – 19:30 Music from the Houses

On Saturday afternoon, we follow a route, under the directorial curation of director Georgia Mavragani, through the Pontian quarter of Elefsina, with selected “home” music flowing into the public space through the doors and windows of the houses. We walk around the place and listen to the route’s musical composition, picking up the thread of its history to end up in the district’s central square (Filikis Eterias Square).

19:30 – 22:00 Mystery_49  Symposium #2: Black Sea

The walking action Music from the Houses will be directly followed by an ethno-regional celebration at the central square of the Pontian quarter of Elefsina. This action is a unique synergy between traditional folk music and local gastronomy, focusing on the anthropogeography of Elefsina, mixing the songs and recipes of the Black Sea on the same “ecological table.”

The crucial role of culture in promoting sustainability and strengthening ecological awareness, through the presentation of works and synergies on relevant themes, as included in the official artistic programme of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture. Moderated by Georgia Voudouri, Director of Cultural Development of 2023 Eleusis. Also featuring the screening of a video with bried remarks from the Belgian collective TimeCircus.

A discussion on the development of innovative ideas/answers to the specific problems of the region, aiming at the transition to a new model of development. A presentation of the innovation actions by the ECoC, as well as by important representatives of the region’s industry, on sustainable construction, recycling of materials, participatory design, sustainable urban development in general, and innovative cultural products. New, environmentally-friendly ways of coexistence (#eco_art, #symposia, #homemade_music, #piquenique_oasis), which inspire unique collective artistic projects combining ecological awareness with the love for the place. Moderated by Dr. Vassiliki Koniakou from the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ACEin).

15:00 22:00 Picnic at OASIS

The OASIS campsite, hidden within the urban fabric of Elefsina, welcomes visitors of all ages with a picnic demonstrating the various ways to integrate sustainable practices into everyday life, in a celebration that will last until the evening. Festival visitors will have the opportunity to bring the food of their choice and listen to music from local DJs and bands from Elefsina, attend film screenings and watch documentaries about the environment.

18.30 Cycling Ride. Starting Point: OASIS

During the picnic, a cycling ride will be organized for anyone wishing to participate, starting from the former OASIS campsite. The route will cross the city of Elefsina, including the mouth of the river Sarandapótamos, the coastal front and the Old Olive Mill of Elefsina.

19.00 Art Installation by Kostis Velonis, Mystery_22  Straw Falling on Concrete Floors, at the Old Olive Mill

The cycling ride will terminate at the Old Olive Mill of Elefsina, where those interested will have the opportunity to take a short tour of the in situ sculptural installation by distinguished visual artist Kostis Velonis, Mystery_22  Straw Falling on Concrete Floors.

The residents of Elefsina and the visitors of the Ecoculture Festival can take part in Parallel Actions for all ages, inspired by the philosophy and themes of the two-day festival, and much more.

Selected farms from the Open Farm Days platform, specializing in sustainable farming and alternative production methods, open their gates and welcome visitors to showcase localism, seasonality and the minimization of the ecological footprint of the agricultural process, making the heart of ecological consciousness beat loudly in West Attica. Old City Hall of Elefsina

Exhibits made of recycled and printed plastic produced in the pioneering 3D Printing, Circular Economy and Recycling Laboratory, as well as the story behind the creative initiative of transition from recycling to 3D printing, await guests of all ages in the recently renovated area of the Old City Hall of Elefsina. Just 21km from the center of Athens, one of the most important sacred cities of antiquity, the city of the Eleusinian Mysteries and birthplace of Aeschylus, Elefsina is the fourth European Capital of Culture hosted in Greece. You can access Elefsina in the following ways:

Via car or motorcycle via Attiki Odos or Athinon Avenue, just a 25-minute drive from the Athens city center.           
Via bus (lines 845 and 871 from Piraeus, line 876 from the “Agia Marina” metro station and line 878 from Acharnai).      
Via the suburban railway (Magoula Station and then bus line 863).
Via KTEL (intercity public transport bus service -> line Megara – Nea Peramos – Eleusis; starting point at Asomaton Square, Thission).
