A concert specially designed for 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture in the framework of the Aeschylia Festival, combining two of the popular musical ensemble’s programmes, Invariants and Okho. Invariants is a programme for a keyboard and percussion trio, in which Rain Tree (1981) by Tōru Takemitsu and Les Invariants (2021) by Michaël Levinas are interspersed between three trio sonatas for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach. Okho, composed by Iannis Xenakis on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Revolution and scored for three musicians playing djembe, is a work that strikes a rare balance between the visceral and the cerebral, creating a kind of tribal modernism.
Founded in 1962, the Percussions de Strasbourg are world-renowned ambassadors of musical creation. Their exceptional repertoire includes 20th century masterpieces, their own compositions, as well as more than 350 works, written especially for them. 60 years after their founding, and having received around 30 international awards, they continue to innovate, travelling all around the world in major international festivals in Berlin, Osaka, Persepolis, Sydney and New York.
