#4 Βuilding at the Kanellopoulou 17 – Mystery 85 – City Patterns

M2P presents a series of patterns printed on 10 natural-fiber banners. The project was created through a research process on the folk heritage and cultural history of the various communities of Elefsina. Working closely with the local cultural associations that represent different areas of Greece, as well as the people who comprise these associations, we recorded their experiences, their memories from their ancestry and places of origin, and, finally, their art and symbols, as those are manifested in embroideries and other artifacts. Subsequently, and in accordance with the methodology that runs through all of their work, M2P (Aliki Kakoulidou and Dimitra Vasilakou), isolated details from these images and narrations, and edited them into something new. The patterns correspond to ten different places: Asia Minor, Chios, Corfu, Crete, the Dodecanese Islands, Elefsina, Epirus, Peloponnese, Pontus, and Thessaly). Using the traditional silkscreen method, the banners were printed on natural fabrics, with eco-friendly materials. They will be posted on a corner building at 17 Kanellopoulou Street, thus creating a visual narrative in open conversation with the city’s contemporary look. Afterwards, they will be given to and repurposed by the cultural associations. The second stage of the work entails documenting the above mentioned research, curation and creative processes in the form of a printed document.

#12 Private Building, str. Kanellopoulou – “Kanellopoulou 33 (next to Teleios)”

How much does the neighbourhood keep hidden and how much does it unveil?

The stories of people, their wanderings, memories and traumas, and of course the city itself and its landmarks come to inhabit on the verge of private and public space, in a half-finished building, in an in-between place, where there are no doors to intercept, divide or protect.

PYRKAL factory, the female workers, the refugees, the cement, Panelefsiniakos, the balconies, the kids’ games, the big Kronos strike, Panagiotis Farmakis, the courtyards, the feasts, the loves, the longings, Kazantzidis’ grave, become the primary material of the research. Small fragments of images and stories create a collective way of storytelling.

Using a song by Stelios Kazantzidis, the stories of the residents of Elefsina and the body as tools, the 6 choreographers of U(R)TOPIAS Academy of Choreography compose a world made of their own personal and emotional engagement with the city. They articulate fragments of an everyday life that, despite adversities, has learned to water its beauty and sing of its longings.
