Elefsina’s Old Town Hall comes alive

Renovation works are already underway for one of the most important legacy projects for 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, as well as for the Municipality of Elefsina.

Monday, November 15, 2021, marked the beginning of renovation works for one of Elefsina’s most emblematic buildings, the Old Town Hall. The Old Town Hall is part of the archaeological site at Nikolaidou pedestrian street, and the building is a landmark for the city of Elefsina, as well as one of the most important legacy projects that will be left to the city by the institution of the ECoC.

The building’s renovation is being carried out with the kind sponsorship of Metron SA.

The aim is for the building to become a reference point for the residents of Elefsina and the surrounding areas, as well as for visitors to the city, both during the ECoC title year and after its completion, when it will become the property of the Municipality of Elefsina until 2040.

As part of the European Capital of Culture, it is expected to function as the central hub of Eleusis 2023, hosting, on its ground floor, an Information Point, the Ticket Office and the Shop of the institution, while the building’s first floor will be transformed into an impressive space that will host the Documentation Center and a meeting, exhibition and presentation area.

A few words about the Old Town Hall

The building of the Old Town Hall of Elefsina is one of the city’s most important landmarks. It is an emblematic two-story building that “WAS ERECTED AT THE EXPENSE OF THE COMMUNITY IN 1928 DURING THE PRESIDENCY OF I. THANASOULOPOULOS,” as the marble inscription on its main façade testifies. It is strategically located, very close to the central square of Elefsina, Iroon Square, within the archaeological site, facing the city’s main pedestrian crossing, Nikolaidou Street. It is a prominent building, with exits in all directions.

The building originally served as the Town Hall of Elefsina, while in 2002 it was transformed into a Vocational Training Center. In recent years, it has been used by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Western Attica as a space for the study, collection and storage of antiquities.

The building’s strategic location and history makes it essential that it is used as a reference center in the European Capital of Culture, as it is part of the sites that are being developed or reactivated thanks to Elefsina’s assumption of the ECoC title, as well as part of the legacy programmes for the city and the wider region.
