Old Railway Station

I. Traulou

On 4 April 1884, the first train drew into the newly-built Elefsina Railway Station, while in 2001, the last train passed through and the station ceased to operate. Listed by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports in 1985, this two-storey building fell out of use and into disrepair. Later, from the start of the city’s candidacy onwards (2015 to the present), and after essential conservation and restoration work had been carried out by 2023 Eleusis, the building was initially used as an office space, while European Capital of Culture actions and events were also held on the premises, as well as along the abandoned railway tracks and in the nearby groves. The reuse of this building forms part of the 2023 Eleusis Architectural Heritage Development strategy, and there are plans for its permanent use by the local authorities, and by young people from across the wider area, in order to meet cultural/education sector needs. The property was handed over to the Municipality of Elefsina by its owner – the GAIAOSE public service company (part of the Hellenic Railways Organisation – OSE).
