Transformation: From chaos to form | Ceramic Exhibition

Entrance to the Old Oil Mill Factory will be available through the parking area.

2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, in the framework of of the Innovation Lab, presents the visual arts exhibition “Transformation” curated by Athanasios Katsaras. Ceramic artists from different backgrounds and paths come together at the Old Oil Mill Factory of Elefsina, showcasing works that explore the journey from the formless to the embodied — from chaos to form.

On Saturday 28 June, alongside the exhibition, there will be a firing of the ceramics created during the first workshop, which took place at the Innovation Lab the previous Saturday (17:00–19:00). On Sunday 29 June, the firing of ceramics from the second workshop, also held last Saturday, will follow (19:00–21:00).

Using primary elements such as earth, water, air, fire, along with memory and inventiveness, the artists highlight the continuous transformations of the material, producing expressions of meaning through the human touch.

A few words about ceramicist Athanasios Katsaras

Athanasios Katsaras was born in Elefsina, the son of a vase painter and a ceramicist. He studied Sociology and Physical Education in Athens. In 1990, he took over the family workshop and founded the “Amasis Painter Ceramic Studio Gallery” in Santorini, where he worked until 2000.

In 2014, he represented Greece in Washington, D.C., USA, during the European Union Month of Culture, organizing open workshops in vase painting and figurine sculpture. Today, he collaborates with museums and educational institutions on the creation of replicas and the development of educational programmes.

His workshop, “Amasis Painter Ceramic Studio Gallery,” is now based in Elefsina.
