Faces of Elefsina is a photographic and multimedia installation depicting the diverse communities of Elefsina. Built among ancient Greek ruins, the small industrial city of Elefsina serves as a microcosm for issues surrounding labor-migration, environmental degradation, ancient glory, and what it means to call a place home within the myriad of contradictions. This project asks the question, who are the Elesfinians today and how ancestral roots inform personal psyche, daily life and preserve tradition? The artist captures a cross section of the population with nearly 100 images, depicting the local Elefsinians, descendants of Asia Minor, Pontos, Peloponnese, Crete, Albania, Pakistan India and Roma. “Faces of Elefsina” explores how people orient their place in the world through ancestral roots, relationships and sense of belonging while preserving their individual and collective histories. The artistic research in progress, will be presented during the Opening Ceremony of 2023 Eleusis with a projection on the facade of the Old Town Hall of Elefsina.
