Archaeological Site

Sotiriou Gkioka

The archaeological site includes the hill of the acropolis, where the settlements of ancient Eleusis were developed from prehistoric times to late antiquity and mainly the famous Sanctuary of Demeter where the Eleusinian Mysteries were performed, on the eastern slope of the hill. The acropolis and the Sanctuary were surrounded by high walls reinforced with towers.

The visitor, on his way to the site, first crosses the Roman courtyard where are the temple of Propylaia Artemis, the Eschara, the remains of a fountain and two triumphal arches. It then enters the Precinct of the Sanctuary from the imposing Great Propylaia, next to which the Kallikhoro Frear is preserved. In the continuation of its course, it passes through the Little Propylaia, having the cave of Plutonium on its right, and going up the Pompiki Odos, it reaches the main temple of Demeter, the Telestirion.
