The Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, stated in 12 of July at Eleusis City Hall her support for our city’s claim, inviting everyone to act as ambassadors of Eleusis’ vision.
Mrs Dourou underlined, among other things, that “the time has come for a city with unique features to host an emblematic institution, like that of the European Capital of Culture. Eleusis has exactly what is takes to become European Capital of Culture. Because, quite simply, its cultural routes remain indelible until today. They withstood the despicable environmental degradation suffered by the city, due to its industrial past, for the sake of profit. Mrs Dourou also pointed out that “Eleusis’ past and present can send a unique message of coexistence and overcoming the current obstacles. It is this aspect of the European identity that gives hope for the future and stability for today, while at the same time, its selection is part of a mutually beneficial relationship; both for Europe and for Greece itself, because it constitutes the most appropriate vehicle for arts and culture, as tools for tackling the nationalistic walls and exclusions. Eleusis has everything it takes to become a sustainable cultural centre of Western Attica, but also of the entire Region of Attica.
Finally, the Regional Governor concluded that “Eleusis’ cause is a common cause, a matter of cultural code, a matter of spirit and a universal cause of modern humanism, which is needed by the country and, in these critical times, with no arrogance intended, is also needed by the European Union itself”
