After Mystery 134 Persephone, the red carpet, which was first presented as part of the artistic programme of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture by Collectif MASI in collaboration with Joshua Olsthoorn, the work continued its journey at the Salon de Montrouge (2023), collecting objects from the residents of Montrouge. It then took to the streets of the multicultural neighborhood of Belleville during Nuit Blanche (2024), denouncing the bloodshed of wars.
The film surrounding the social sculpture Nuit rouge, tapis blanc will be screened in Paris during Nuit Blanche 2025, on June 7, in the presence of the residents who contributed to the creation of the piece.
With the support of 2023 Eleusis and the EU-Japan Fest, a rich research residency was held last month in Kyoto, Japan. This was part of the Kyoto Kinugasa Art Residence for Community (KKARC) by Anewal Gallery, during which excerpts from the films Persephone, the red carpet and Nuit rouge, tapis blanc were screened.
During the residency, bonds were formed with the neighborhood, where a collective performance will be presented in the autumn of 2026.
Matsuri (祭り/祭), the traditional festivals of Japan, have deep historical roots. The goal is to create a contemporary Matsuri in public space, involving the residents themselves, with the red carpet as the central symbolic element and main source of provocation.
Red carpets are often encountered in Kyoto, with different functions and symbolism compared to those in the West. The red carpet will seek shared symbols through interaction. It will unfold in the public space of Kyoto, changing formations and connecting its everyday uses—often mystical—through a kinesthetic vocabulary inspired by daily life.
