Golden City – Mystirio Kanali a corporate quayside culture club in Eleusis and Bremen where European people meet via Internet-live-stream with music, (hi)story, research and performances June, 10th to July, 16th 2017 “Golden City“ – Bremen (Germany) and “Mystirio Kanali” – Eleusis (Greece).
From June 10th to July 16th, an electronic communication bridge between Eleusis and Bremen will be set up; two cities which share similar characteristics (sea, harbours, inactive industrial buildings, etc.). This is the “Golden City – Mystirio Kanali”, which is based on an idea of the German musician and director Frauke Wilhelm, who collaborated with the artists from Greece: Dimitra Gliati, Nadia Kavoulakou, Dimitris Babilis, Tatiana Pitta, Adrian Frieling and Katerina Maoutsou, as well as with Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture.
Webcams will run permanently to record every action inside the areas and broadcast it to a big screen at the other (and vice versa), giving the impression of a double, common room. Artists on both sides will develop a programme, especially for this technical format, containing smaller and bigger “shows“, outdoor spectacles and meetings of music associations, labour unions, knitting clubs and others. There will be singing, dancing, discussions and game playing with the audience. Locals will discuss their lives, their work, (hi)stories of their city, their dreams (for Europe) and their concerns.
The programme of events is as follows:
Sunday 11 June, 21:00 – “The Mysteries and Myths of Two Cities”
The stage is taken over by the mysteries and myths of the two cities. Two cities where reality is mixed with myth and wonderful stories are told by the locals. Stories about the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Sacred Way, the cement and steel factories, the refineries, the shipyards and the workforce that came here as a result of the Asia Minor Catastrophe are blended with stories about the harbour bars of the ’50s and’ 60s in the legendary port of Bremen and how the war-torn city was rebuilt with money given from (American) seafarers and the Bremen port workers and the ordinary people experienced their “economic miracle”.
Say your opinion on the Greek-German relations! What do you want to share with the Germans? What do they want to say to the Greeks? Personal opinions, experiences, stories and, of course, every kind of stereotype, today, all of them are welcome!
Tuesday 20 June, 21:00 – The ports of Europe
A special night dedicated to the refugees living in both cities. What are their experiences so far, but above all, what are their desires, goals and dreams for tomorrow? From Bremen’s side, we’ll get to know the heroes of last year’s international music-theatre production “Sehnsuchtslieder von der Gegenküste” (Songs of Longing from the Opposite Coast). The evening will be closed with the stage composition “Penelopes” by the Exarcheia Choir, directed by Aphrodite Mitsopoulou. Extracts of interviews with immigrants from Georgia and Syria, as well as fragments of the Iliad and The Trojan Women will compose this bittersweet “women’s epic”. In the first part of the show, the Georgian women have a “dialogue” with the Iliad, and in the second part, we see the Syrian ones as Trojans.
Say your opinion on the Greek-German relations! What do you want to share with the Germans? What do they want to say to the Greeks? Personal opinions, experiences, stories and, of course, every kind of stereotype, today, all of them are welcome!
Soccer stories, slogans, and moments from glorious local clubs: Panelefsiniakos and Bremen Association Football Club (BSV). What is the role of a “small” sports club for a local community? How does it embody common dreams, goals, but also hostility? Veteran and active athletes, but also sports fans, intervene in the discussion with Skype to serve as an…arbitrator!
