Golden City – Mystirio Kanali

Golden City – Mystirio Kanali a corporate quayside culture club in Eleusis and Bremen where European people meet via Internet-live-stream with music, (hi)story, research and performances June, 10th to July, 16th 2017 “Golden City“ – Bremen (Germany) and “Mystirio Kanali” – Eleusis (Greece).

From June 10th to July 16th, an electronic communication bridge between Eleusis and Bremen will be set up; two cities which share similar characteristics (sea, harbours, inactive industrial buildings, etc.). This is the “Golden City – Mystirio Kanali”, which is based on an idea of the German musician and director Frauke Wilhelm, who collaborated with the artists from Greece: Dimitra Gliati, Nadia Kavoulakou, Dimitris Babilis, Tatiana Pitta, Adrian Frieling and Katerina Maoutsou, as well as with Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture.

Webcams will run permanently to record every action inside the areas and broadcast it to a big screen at the other (and vice versa), giving the impression of a double, common room. Artists on both sides will develop a programme, especially for this technical format, containing smaller and bigger “shows“, outdoor spectacles and meetings of music associations, labour unions, knitting clubs and others. There will be singing, dancing, discussions and game playing with the audience. Locals will discuss their lives, their work, (hi)stories of their city, their dreams (for Europe) and their concerns.

The programme of events is as follows:

JUNE

Saturday 10 June, 21:00 – Opening

Eleusis meets Bremen, Germany and they’re jointly launching through Skype a “Mysterious Channel” at OLE’s old canteen in Eleusis Bay. Join us in dancing, singing, saying stories and listening to testimonies by locals. Artists’ groups and the Folklore Association of Eleusis “Adrachti” will present events inspired by the history of the two places, accompanied by a live traditional music orchestra.

Sunday 11 June, 21:00 – “The Mysteries and Myths of Two Cities”

The stage is taken over by the mysteries and myths of the two cities. Two cities where reality is mixed with myth and wonderful stories are told by the locals. Stories about the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Sacred Way, the cement and steel factories, the refineries, the shipyards and the workforce that came here as a result of the Asia Minor Catastrophe are blended with stories about the harbour bars of the ’50s and’ 60s in the legendary port of Bremen and how the war-torn city was rebuilt with money given from (American) seafarers and the Bremen port workers and the ordinary people experienced their “economic miracle”.

Tuesday 13 June, 10:00 – “Old traditional children’s group games”

Children from Bremen and Eleusis will learn, play and “swap” games from the past. Games that we once played in the streets and neighbourhoods will once again come alive to the old canteen, in order to bring back sweet children’s memories to the older ones and to keep the memory alive for the new generation.

Friday 16 June, 21:00 – Metamorphosis – New life in old buildings

Presentation/discussion on the substantial and viable transformation of the two cities.
As Europe is subjected to extensive structural change, the labour and the cities are changing, while industrial buildings and facilities stay empty and get ruined. How can cities format these developments? How can new uses and new identities be developed for stand-alone buildings or whole building blocks? Tonight, we intend to make clear the transformation achieved so far; the crossroads of changes in Bremen and Eleusis. ZwischenZeitZentrale Bremen will describe the transformation of “creation points” such as the “Wurst-Case” or the Wollkämmerei and will talk about the European exchange in strategies concerning new… re-use. The Greek side will be represented by Peggy Tsolakaki; urban and spatial planner and a member of Eleusis 2021 team, responsible for infrastructure issues, Pari Kapella on behalf of ASPROFOS Engineering; a civil engineer who will present to us the final study of the reconstruction of the IRIS colour industry and Nicholas Karachalis, Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Planning and Regional Development of the University of Thessaly/HOU, representing the URBACT Refill programme.

Sunday 18 June, 18:00 – Open microphones / Greek-German “Parliament”

Say your opinion on the Greek-German relations! What do you want to share with the Germans? What do they want to say to the Greeks? Personal opinions, experiences, stories and, of course, every kind of stereotype, today, all of them are welcome!

Tuesday 20 June, 21:00 – The ports of Europe

Former dockers and sailors from both cities share their thoughts on today’s and tomorrow’s work in the harbours, as well as memories and stories from its old, good, but also, tough times. Back then when each load, each box, each cotton ball, was carried one by one from the deck, with sacks loaded into trolleys or a crane. When there were no gloves, safety shoes and insurance coverage…

Wednesday 21 June, 19:00 – European Music Day

Student bands from Eleusis and Bremen in a common show.

Friday 23 June, 21:00 – Refugees

A special night dedicated to the refugees living in both cities. What are their experiences so far, but above all, what are their desires, goals and dreams for tomorrow? From Bremen’s side, we’ll get to know the heroes of last year’s international music-theatre production “Sehnsuchtslieder von der Gegenküste” (Songs of Longing from the Opposite Coast). The evening will be closed with the stage composition “Penelopes” by the Exarcheia Choir, directed by Aphrodite Mitsopoulou. Extracts of interviews with immigrants from Georgia and Syria, as well as fragments of the Iliad and The Trojan Women will compose this bittersweet “women’s epic”. In the first part of the show, the Georgian women have a “dialogue” with the Iliad, and in the second part, we see the Syrian ones as Trojans.

Thursday, June 29, 21:00 – Improvised music feast / Lokalrunde

Join us for an improvised music feast through Skype, or as it is called in German, a “Lokalrunde”! Let’s swap stories, dances and songs!

JULY

Saturday 1 July, 21:00 – Two cities, one table
The Folklore Association of Eleusis “Adrachti” and the German Housewife Association meet each other for a musical exchange and exchange of taste on local culture through Skype. There will be cooking and baking, as well as many surprises!

Tuesday, July 4, 21:00 – Panlefsinianos meets Bremen Sports Club (BSV).

Soccer stories, slogans, and moments from glorious local clubs: Panelefsiniakos and Bremen Association Football Club (BSV). What is the role of a “small” sports club for a local community? How does it embody common dreams, goals, but also hostility? Veteran and active athletes, but also sports fans, intervene in the discussion with Skype to serve as an…arbitrator!

Wednesday, July 12,  21:00 – Music-theatrical finale in Bremen
