Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture, in collaboration with the French Institute of Athens, hosts for the first time in Greece the French Baraka Circus. The performances begin on December 16, 2017, will last until January 21, 2018, and are taking place in the area opposite to the premises of the Region of Western Attica on the Iroon Polytechniou street in Eleusis. Following shows in France and Italy, the “Baraka” performances are hosted in Eleusis and will continue their journey to Europe and the Mediterranean up to May 2018. The show includes two independent parts linked together with a single spectacle which uses elements of circus, dance, music and dramaturgy, physical theatre, aerial and terrestrial acrobatics, creating thus a road trip that passes through Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Eleusis is inextricably linked, both in a symbolic and literal sense, with the grass-roots classes and the working class. Taking this particular position occupied by the city in the collective imaginary opinion as a starting point, Eleusis 2021 intends to focus on forms of popular theatre, which are not so widespread in Greece, such as the modern circus and the street theatre.
Through its interconnection with the contemporary European stage in the field of popular theatre, Eleusis 2021 aspires to introduce to the Greek public contemporary trends, practices and important relevant groups. Hosting the ‘Baraka’ circus for two months in Eleusis takes place within our focus on popular theatre.
Baraka: Crossing Europe and the Mediterranean (September 2017 – May 2018)
A team of 14 people (artists, technicians, directors, cooks, communication managers, etc.) travels across Europe and the Mediterranean, from the West to the East. Through its road trip, endowed with a spectacle and a tent, the community crosses borders, meets and communicates with different people from the Mediterranean and Europe.
In a vague, eternal, funny, poetic tent, two technicians, four acrobats, a dancer, a singer and a musician share the stage. In a deeply poetic and humorous way, they paint a fresco. With respect and hope, they invite us to face our rich and beautiful differences by painting a world message on the wall.
The thick wall separates, encloses, conceals. On the other hand, it protects. The Baraka performance questions our relations, our differences and the coexistence. The limits are as personal as universal, like the walls we build or destroy.
Earnings from the first show (Saturday, December 16) will be given to those affected by the recent devastating flood in West Attica.
