The artistic director of Eleusis 2021, Kelly Diapouli visited Aarhus, one of the two European Capitals of Culture 2017 that welcomed 2017 with a big Opening Ceremony on the night of the 21st January 2017!
Aarhus officially kicked off its year as the European Capital of Culture, promising a 2017 that is jam-packed with more than 350 cultural events.
The Opening Ceremony was filled with magical moments, with a promenade of several thousand lanterns, six large Viking ships, almost a thousand choir singers, musicians and several thousand citizens carrying many thousands of illuminated ships, that transformed Aarhus City Centre into a floating sea of people, music and epic scenarios. The light procession through the city involved more than 5,000 participants from across the region, who walked, sang and had fun, accompanied by lur players, Faroese singer Eivör, Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras, humming, singing and playing to the sound of sea and waves. The procession culminated in a show, projected as tableaus on the big buildings in the Aarhus Harbour.
Kelly Diapouli had also the chance to meet and discuss about possible future collaborations with representatives from other cities who have already been European Capitals of Culture as Mons 2015 and Plissken 2015 as well as with representatives from other cities that are getting prepared to host the ECoC title as Leeuwarden 2018, Valetta 2018, Matera 2019, Plovdiv 2019, Galway 2020 and Rijeka 2020 and representatives from candidate cities that are bidding for the title as Kaunas 2022.
We are very delighed to be member of the ECoC family!
If you’re looking to witness a European Capital of Culture before 2021, then Aarhus 2017 and Pafos 2017 might just be the perfect occasions!
