Eleusis 2021 travelled to Sibiu, the first city in Romania hosting the European Capital of Culture title in 2007, to participate in the conference “2021 – The year of three European Capitals of Culture: How 365 days can inspire a community?
The conference was organized by the Sibiu Performing Arts Market that was established during the European Capital of Culture 2007 and it became well known across Europe.
Following an official invitation of Romania, the Mayor of Eleusis Mr Giorgos Tsoukalas and Eleusis 2021 members, Gabriel Kampanis and Kelly Diapouli, visited Sibiu and met the representatives of Baia Mare, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara, the Romanian cities that are shortlisted for the title of ECOC 2021. The focus of these meetings was to develop long-term partnerships for the artistic program.
The conference was attended by cultural operators, international artists, representatives of public institutions such as representatives of the Ministry of Culture from each shortlisted country and Mayors, the artistic director of Wrocław 2016 and representatives of other candidate cities for European Capital of Culture 2021.
Furthermore, Eleusis 2021 had the opportunity to see more closely the city of Sibiu, an example of how the ECOC effects the urban regeneration of a city. Finally, during the Sibiu Performing Arts Market we had the opportunity to watch performances of important contemporary European artists such as Thomas Ostermaier, the Giannina Carbunariu and Martin Zimmerman.
