The School of Architecture of National Technical University of Athens, in collaboration with Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture – Candidate City and the Municipality of Eleusis met on Monday July 11th at the Old Oil Mill of Eleusis for a discussion on the student projects of the Division III in Eleusis.
Under the programme “Eleusis: The Living Museum”, which aspires to transform the entire city of Eleusis into a living and under constant renewal museum, Eleusis 2021 has launched a close cooperation with the School of Architecture of National Technical University of Athens. During this academic year, Eleusis has been the field of study for nine different faculty courses. Thirteen professors, supported by sixteen partners and more than 500 students worked during a whole year on specific points of interest about Eleusis, such as the seafront area, the centre, the archaeological site, the Old Oil Mill, the old quarries et al.
The results of these studies were presented during the meeting. Under the guidance of their professors, the young architects submitted dozens of original ideas for making best use of the seafront area, restoring the quarries, properly exploiting the old “Iris” Paint Industry complex, as well as the archaeological site and the Oil Mill complex.
The debate was coordinated by the professors of Architecture Vana Xenou and Giorgos Parmenidis, who are primarily responsible for the project “Eleusis: The Living Museum”, while their colleagues Stavros Stavridis, Ariadne Vozani, Ifigenia Mari, Kostas Moraitis, George Gyparakis and Κostas Ntoflas explained how they cooperated with the students in the context of the relevant courses.
What results from this process, which we hope to be continued in full throttle over the next years, constitutes the basis for the different approaches used in the city as a museum issue and the programme “Eleusis: The Living Museum”.
