Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture \u2013 Candidate City<\/b>\u00a0hosts the interactive art project \u201cGrowing Ground\u201d curated by the\u00a0artist Maria Ikonomopoulou,\u00a0to be held from September to November 2016 at the offices of Eleusis 2021\u00a0in the\u00a0Old Railway Station of Eleusis<\/b>. The art exhibition opens to the public on\u00a0Sunday October 2nd<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and lasts until\u00a0November 15th<\/span><\/span>. The exhibition will be also\u00a0accompanied by a workshop\u00a0on sharing of public space in contemporary cities.<\/p>\n

Growing Ground<\/b>\u00a0is an interactive project that invites people of Eleusis to participate in creating a collective patio\u00a0in the outdoor space of the Old Railway Station, by\u00a0giving one of the plants of their own yard. In return, they will be offered\u00a0a drawing made of\u00a0lime on the pavement in front of their front door, inspired and especially\u00a0made\u00a0for the residents by the artist Maria Ikonomopoulou.<\/p>\n

The plants collected\u00a0will be placed in specially designed pots with the donors\u2019 name and their address of residence. Drawings, similar to those made on the sidewalk in front of each plant-giver, will be also designed\u00a0in the courtyard of the Old Railway Station, in order to define the collective courtyard.<\/p>\n

The project is based on the artist\u2019s\u00a0personal contact\u00a0with the Eleusinians and her\u00a0interest in the city\u2019s history through personal narratives. Concepts such as caring, lending\u00a0and\u00a0offering a\u00a0gift are affected, through creating\u00a0a place for exchanging views\u00a0on the public space, as well as the house\u2019s\u00a0effect in the cohesion of a community and using green areas in modern cities. The title literally refers to a piece of cultivated\u00a0ground, but also -figuratively\u00a0speaking- to the ground\u00a0we can grow between us.<\/p>\n

During the project, alongside the exchange of plants and drawings on the pavement, the artist Maria Ikonomopoulou discusses\u00a0with the\u00a0city residents, young and old, and records the information, questions and concerns around these concepts in a video to be displayed in the collective patio on\u00a0Sunday October 2nd<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at the workshop.<\/p>\n

WORKSHOP \u2013\u00a0Sunday, October 2nd<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

On this day, three speakers,\u00a0Wim Oudshoorn<\/b>\u00a0(Netherlands),\u00a0Katerina Drossou<\/b>\u00a0(Greece) and\u00a0Carolien Hoogland<\/b>\u00a0(Netherlands), will respectively\u00a0speak for school gardens and gardening lessons in primary school children in Hague, architecture and social relations based on buildings located in a perimeter around the\u00a0Old Railway Station and experiencing a life without money, in other words,\u00a0a time based on the principle of offer and exchange. \u0391\u00a0significant\u00a0part of this workshop constitutes the discussion with the audience after each presentation.<\/p>\n

Art Exhibition of Maria Ikonomopoulou at the\u00a0Old Railway Station<\/b><\/p>\n

Maria Ikonomopoulou (Kalamata 1961, Dutch citizen since 1985), has carried out many projects in public spaces with the participation of ordinary people in their production, such as \u201cTemporary \/ Timeless\u201d (Amsterdam 2013) and \u201cWater Speaking\u201d (Wilnis 2009).<\/p>\n

Since 2005, she\u00a0works on the \u201cGrowing Care\u201d project, based on recordings of urban green areas\u00a0which\u00a0individuals take care of\u00a0in front of their homes and shops. Through these recordings and works created based on\u00a0this material, she\u00a0processes the questions that concern her, regarding the sharing of public space in contemporary cities.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0building of the Old Railway Station of Eleusis,\u00a0she\u00a0will present a series of works from the \u201cGrowing Care\u201d project, as well as\u00a0an installation especially\u00a0made\u00a0for this area,\u00a0in cooperation with volunteers from Eleusis.<\/p>\n
