Living in Megara\u00a0 with her husband, Harjot, and their\u00a0 18-month-old daughter Dilnoor,\u00a0 she spends her days trying to cope\u00a0 with her new reality. <\/span><\/p>\n THE BEAUTY OF IMPERFECT THINGS<\/strong> Discussion with the directors will follow.<\/p>\n The film describes moments from\u00a0 the everyday life of Nontas Lechris\u00a0 in Erythres, Attica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A documentary-opera on the\u00a0 controversial life of progressive\u00a0 composer and communist Jan Kapr\u00a0 (1914-88), a Stalin Prize-winningcomposer whose work was later\u00a0 banned in socialist Czechoslovakia.\u00a0 As Kapr\u2019s life escalates towards\u00a0 pivotal moments, we watch opera songs that reflect these critical\u00a0 junctures in his life, moments that\u00a0 determine an artist\u2019s fate. The film\u00a0 explores the nature of memory and storytelling, using Kapr\u2019s personal,\u00a0 unedited amateur films, that reveal\u00a0 his humour, inner struggles, and\u00a0 desire to leave his mark for eternity. <\/span><\/p>\n In February 2023, Elefsina welcomed\u00a0 TimeCircus, and with them the\u00a0 largest pilgrimage procession in the\u00a0 3,500 years of this city\u2019s history.\u00a0 The members of the Belgian\u00a0 collective set off from Antwerp\u00a0 on 27 May 2022, and travelled\u00a0 3,000 kilometres on foot over\u00a0 nine months, crossing the whole\u00a0 of Europe, towing the Landship,\u00a0 which moves exclusively by human\u00a0 power. Their long journey was an\u00a0 exercise in being \u201con the road\u201d and\u00a0 a vivid commentary on the 21st\u00a0 century of recession, climate change,\u00a0 and unmitigated consumption of\u00a0 natural resources. At the same time,\u00a0 it was an act of encouragement,\u00a0 strength, hope, and participation\u00a0 by all European citizens, as well\u00a0 as a valuable contribution to the\u00a0 Opening Ceremony of 2023 Eleusis.\u00a0 Right after arriving at Elefsina,\u00a0 TimeCircus began the construction\u00a0 of The Ark (Mystery 99 The Ark<\/i>).\u00a0 Within a few months, they created\u00a0 a space for culture, recreation, and\u00a0 creativity in the heart of the city, the\u00a0 ARKOPOLIS. <\/span><\/p>\n 25km <\/span><\/i>is a site-specific project\u00a0 inspired by the city of Eleusis and\u00a0 the ancient history of the Eleusinian\u00a0 Mysteries. The Eleusinian Mysteries\u00a0 were celebrated in the Sacred City\u00a0 of Eleusis once a year, in honour of\u00a0 goddesses Demeter and Persephone.\u00a0 Although they were considered\u00a0 the highest religious ceremony in\u00a0 Ancient Greece, their focus was\u00a0 the human being rather than the\u00a0 gods. A significant ritual of the\u00a0 Mysteries was the Procession, which\u00a0 reverently traversed the Sacred\u00a0 Way from Athens to the Sanctuary\u00a0 of Demeter in Eleusis. It is said\u00a0 that this particular route led the\u00a0 participants to a higher mental and\u00a0 spiritual state, vital for their earthly\u00a0 life and beneficial for their afterlife.\u00a0 Starting from the very beginning\u00a0 of the Sacred Way in Athens to\u00a0 eventually reach the archaeological\u00a0 site of Ancient Eleusis, four women\u00a0 walk 25 kilometres in silence as a\u00a0 new Procession, tracing their own\u00a0 meanings and their own emerging\u00a0 truths. The project <\/span>25km <\/span><\/i>was realised\u00a0 in the framework of 2023 Eleusis <\/span>European Capital of Culture and\u00a0 the artistic programme <\/span>U(R)TOPIAS\u00a0 Academy of Choreography<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>25km <\/span><\/i>was\u00a0 also supported by the Cultural and\u00a0 Development Non-Profit Organisation\u00a0 NEON through its Annual Grants\u00a0 Programme. <\/span><\/p>\n Sacred Way \/ Persephonis Street <\/span><\/i>is a\u00a0 hybrid visual documentary about\u00a0 the contemporary Iera Odos [Sacred\u00a0 Way]. Playing on the myth of\u00a0 Persephone, a woman whose life\u00a0 is completely defined by others \u2212\u00a0 her mother in life, her husband in\u00a0 death, and the mortals who manage\u00a0 the earth to bear fruits and for\u00a0 the seasons to alternate \u2212 the film\u00a0 presents the protagonist as a modern\u00a0 Persephone who sets out on Iera\u00a0 Odos from Kerameikos to Elefsina, in\u00a0 order to bring spring. The distance\u00a0 from one end of the Iera Odos to the\u00a0 other is defined as the intermediate\u00a0 distance from the Underworld\u00a0 (Hades\/Kerameikos) to the surface\u00a0 of the earth (Eleusis) during the\u00a0 Anthropocene era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Playing on a moving bus, the band\u00a0 My Wet Calvin presented their\u00a0 album <\/span>Chamomile <\/span><\/i>three years after <\/span>it was first released. The route\u00a0 was drawn from the same point\u00a0 where initiates of the Eleusinian\u00a0 Mysteries started the procession in\u00a0 Kerameikos to conclude in Elefsina,\u00a0 traversing Iera Odos [Sacred Way]\u00a0 and Kavalas Avenue, passing\u00a0 by the Sunday scavengers\u2019 flea markets, under the Kifisos river,\u00a0 among the ghosts of the Seat Ibiza\u00a0 cars on Thivon Avenue, outside\u00a0 Dromokaiteio Hospital, driven by\u00a0 Zampetas\u2019s bouzouki melodies and\u00a0 the pure, liberating, undeniable,\u00a0 engulfing, redemptive faith in Saint\u00a0 Athanasia of Aigaleo. <\/span><\/p>\n The seaway to Elefsina and its\u00a0 sanctuary (a site of pilgrimage\u00a0 for the faithful who flocked to\u00a0 be initiated into the rites of the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>goddess) was the second route for\u00a0 reaching this religious destination\u00a0 famed across the ancient world. The\u00a0 sanctuary had two entrances: one\u00a0 to the north-west, where the famous\u00a0 Iera Odos [Sacred Way] from\u00a0 Athens culminated over land, and\u00a0 one to the south, through which\u00a0 those who came by sea entered. The <\/span>(Sacred)* Sea Route<\/span><\/i>, a maritime\u00a0 voyage of cultural experientiality,\u00a0 starts from the famed port of\u00a0 the country, Piraeus, with a\u00a0 uniquely significant and interesting\u00a0 floating cultural\/tourist route\u00a0 and runs through seven historic\u00a0 municipalities, before it concludes\u00a0 to Elefsina.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Following in the footsteps of\u00a0 Plutarch, who made mention of the\u00a0 maritime connection to Ancient\u00a0 Eleusis, the <\/span>(Sacred)* Sea Route <\/span><\/i>can\u00a0 reveal all the cultural and historical\u00a0 riches of this pristine and unspoiled\u00a0 mythic area reaching from the Gulf\u00a0 of Salamis to that of Elefsina.\u00a0 Taking in remarkable historical\u00a0<\/span>events and landmarks (the waters\u00a0 where the Battle of Salamis was\u00a0 fought; the Throne of Xerxes; the\u00a0 island of Salamis, homeland of\u00a0 Ajax; Ancient Eleusis, birthplace\u00a0 of Aeschylus; the site of the\u00a0 Eleusinian Mysteries; and more),\u00a0 as well as the industrial sprawl, this\u00a0 maritime experience \u2013 an initiatory\u00a0 rite of passage through the <\/span>abatons <\/span><\/i>[sacred precincts off limits to the\u00a0 uninitiated] of the area \u2013 seeks\u00a0 to spotlight a misunderstood and\u00a0 underexposed part of Attica with\u00a0 the contribution of multimedia\u00a0 and performing arts. How does\u00a0 an experiential cultural voyage\u00a0 encompass sounds and voices,\u00a0 images and events \u2013 the hidden\u00a0 aspects of this notable land?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n * A route is called sacred (<\/span>iera<\/span><\/i>) when it leads\u00a0 to the sanctuary of a city. <\/span><\/p>\n Aeschylus\u2019 <\/span>Persians<\/span><\/i>, translated\u00a0 by Giorgos Blanas and directed\u00a0 by Nikita Milivojevi\u0107, featuring\u00a0 dramaturgy and music by Dimitris\u00a0 Kamarotos, was staged twice\u00a0 on 28 and 29 July 2023 in the\u00a0 framework of the project <\/span>Mystery\u00a0 35 Persians \u2013 \u0391 Journey in the\u00a0 Array of Souls. <\/span><\/i>The <\/span>Parodos <\/span><\/i>was\u00a0 performed in Perama Megaridos,\u00a0 and then the spectators boarded\u00a0 the ship where the first episode\u00a0 took place; the rest of the play\u00a0 unfolded after their disembarkation\u00a0 in Salamis and concluded, when\u00a0 night had fallen, in front of the sea\u00a0 field where the naval battle was\u00a0 held. This exceptional conjunction\u00a0 of place, project, and participants\u00a0 was designed to leave a film-like\u00a0 footprint. As such, the necessary\u00a0 shootings and sound recordings were arranged and, after some\u00a0 time editing in the studio, the film\u00a0 announced here will be presented\u00a0 in a 12-minute excerpt. Because\u00a0 the theatrical experience is unique\u00a0 and stems from participation in\u00a0 the event itself, not only a video recording was made, but the filmic\u00a0 medium was also used during\u00a0 the performance, so that the latter\u00a0 would have its own rhythm and\u00a0 connection with the audience. <\/span><\/p>\n Unique women came together led by\u00a0 their fervent need to express their\u00a0 artistic nature, which perhaps had\u00a0 been hidden until then, and one of\u00a0 the most unusual <\/span>rizitika <\/span><\/i>songs, titled\u00a0<\/span>the song \u201cKafkos\u201d in a way\u00a0 depicts landscapes, not necessarily\u00a0 through the prism of the <\/span>rizitiko <\/span><\/i>folk tradition, but by weaving,\u00a0 condensing, and treating music as\u00a0 a global, timeless, and universal\u00a0 field of expression, ecstasy, and\u00a0 customary utterance, regardless\u00a0 of its place of origin or era.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cKafkos\u201d (lover), is their first video\u00a0 clip. Through it, the audience gets\u00a0 to know the CH\u00d3RES of Elefsina as\u00a0 faces, gazes, moving bodies, and as\u00a0 a voice in a collective walk on the\u00a0 land of the Thriasian Plain, which\u00a0 united them. The arrangement\u00a0 of\u00a0<\/span>the song \u201cKafkos\u201d in a way\u00a0 depicts landscapes, not necessarily\u00a0 through the prism of the <\/span>rizitiko <\/span><\/i>folk tradition, but by weaving,\u00a0 condensing, and treating music as\u00a0 a global, timeless, and universal\u00a0 field of expression, ecstasy, and\u00a0 customary utterance, regardless\u00a0 of its place of origin or era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Two musical archaeologists from\u00a0 the future arrive in Elefsina today.\u00a0 They collect data on the rhythm of\u00a0 the noise produced by people and\u00a0 machines as they age. The images\u00a0 of their decay are turned into\u00a0 music.<\/span><\/p>\n A document (or a documentary\u00a0 film, or a document captured on\u00a0 film) for the Opening Ceremony,\u00a0 which drew inspiration from the\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>history and mythology of the city\u00a0 itself: the Processions and the link\u00a0<\/span>between the Upper World and\u00a0 the Underworld. The universal\u00a0 opening celebration of 2023 Eleusis\u00a0 unfolded with a spectacular\u00a0 event on the coastal front and\u00a0 a \u201ccolourful\u201d programme of\u00a0 exhibitions, concerts, DJ parties, and\u00a0 events throughout the city. From the\u00a0 colourful mosaic of Elefsina to the\u00a0 rural communities of Aspropyrgos\u00a0 and the manufacturing centres\u00a0 of Megara, a network of\u00a0mystae\u00a0<\/i>[initiates] began to set up and\u00a0 operate in West Attica. These are\u00a0 some of the most defining moments\u00a0 in their formation, always committed\u00a0 \u2013 and therefore decisive \u2013\u00a0to the\u00a0realisation of the artistic vision of\u00a0 2023 Eleusis.<\/p>\n Some of the most renowned and\u00a0 acclaimed contemporary creators\u00a0 came to Elefsina, experienced the\u00a0\u00a0energy of the place, and presented\u00a0 their works as confessions of this\u00a0 experience.
