Participants will take a tour of the city, The true story of the relationship\u00a0 between Frost, a polar bear, and a\u00a0 wildlife filmmaker, documenting\u00a0 how climate change is affecting\u00a0 the lives of everyone living in the\u00a0 Svalbard Archipelago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In May 2023, students from seven\u00a0 European countries met in Elefsina\u00a0 to participate in a unique meeting\u00a0 <\/span>Mystery 149 Pupil Conference: Transition to a Climate-Neutral Future, <\/span><\/i>with the main objective\u00a0 of familiarising themselves\u00a0 with processes of participatory\u00a0 consultation and the experience of\u00a0 environmental walks. Through this\u00a0 audiovisual document-recording,\u00a0 we remember those days of\u00a0 celebration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n CINE ELEUSIS<\/strong> The cinematic depiction of <\/span>unknown and invisible places,\u00a0 stories, and heroes becomes the\u00a0 starting point for a multimedia\u00a0 project that activates key social\u00a0\u00a0issues through in-situ artistic\u00a0 events (visual arts, music, dance,\u00a0 video) in hard-to-reach spaces, with\u00a0 screenings and public actions that\u00a0 provide a platform for vulnerable\u00a0 social groups. The core of <\/span>Mystery 69 Greekies are the abandoned and\u00a0 injured strays in the wider area\u00a0 of the Thriasian Plain \u2013 who are\u00a0 extremely popular for adoption\u00a0 abroad despite their obvious\u00a0 disabilities: the Greekies. The term\u00a0 takes on an allegorical meaning by\u00a0 including anyone who feels isolated\u00a0 or abandoned. In preparation for\u00a0 the filming and screening of the\u00a0 Greekies, on-site public activities\u00a0 bring stray spaces to life through\u00a0 stray films with stray heroes. These activities are filmed and\u00a0 an audiovisual archive is created. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n \u201cThe founding of Panelefsiniakos\u00a0 Sports Club was an event of\u00a0 extraordinary political and cultural\u00a0 significance in Elefsina, a town\u00a0 scarred by social conflict. Sports\u00a0 transform underlying aggression\u00a0 into something else, that produces\u00a0 joy.\u201d These words of Michail\u00a0 Marmarinos, General Artistic\u00a0 Director of 2023 Eleusis Cultural\u00a0 Capital of Europe, capture the\u00a0 social role that Panelefsiniakos has\u00a0 played since its creation in 1931.\u00a0 The Club has offered a remarkable\u00a0 meeting and mingling space. The\u00a0 football team, and later the track <\/span>sports and basketball, have marked\u00a0 the trajectory of a working-class\u00a0 town which, in a span of 150 years,\u00a0 has produced blends of social,\u00a0 economic and political history\u00a0 that are often unique. Through\u00a0<\/span>interviews with older and younger\u00a0 athletes, executives and friends of\u00a0 the Club, the film traces the ties of\u00a0 Panelefsiniakos with the past and\u00a0 present of Elefsina. And it suggests\u00a0 that Panelefsiniakos can continue to\u00a0 play an important social role in the\u00a0 future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The new film by Filippos Koutsaftis is a cinematic mosaic that attempts to\u00a0 assemble the dynamic portrait of Elefsina through snapshots of everyday life,\u00a0 oblique glances at the historical past of the city, from antiquity to the 20th\u00a0 century and, above all, the micro-histories that the director has compiled,\u00a0 collecting testimonies from residents about their life in Elefsina and their\u00a0 particular relationship with the city. Thus, the portrait of Elefsina appears\u00a0 as a sum of individual portraits and the term \u201canthropogeography\u201d takes\u00a0 on an almost literal dimension, in that the city is essentially composed of\u00a0 its citizens, prominent, and anonymous, past and present, living and dead.<\/p>\n The foundation for the project consists of more than 80 hours of archival\u00a0 material, which the director acquired during the shooting of his first film\u00a0 about Elefsina,\u00a0Agelastos Petra<\/i>, over a period of twelve years, from 1988 to 2000. To this material \u2013 an expression of nativeness and a reservoir\u00a0 of cultural memory \u2013 new elements collected by the filmmaker in the 21st\u00a0 century have been added, with testimonies of younger residents and images\u00a0 depicting the tectonic changes that have occurred in the character\u00a0 of Elefsina over time.<\/p>\n The creative interweaving of timelessness and synchronicity sets the tone for\u00a0 the whole film (which is constantly in progress, like Elefsina itself), whether\u00a0 on the micro level, with testimonies of old and young residents and images\u00a0 of everyday life, or on the macro level, with reflections and snapshots\u00a0 that shed light on the cultural heritage and local history, as well as on the\u00a0 developments gradually shaping the new character of the city and bringing\u00a0 about decisive changes in the conditions and lifestyle of its inhabitants.<\/p>\n Taking the Eleusinian Mysteries as a discreet but perceptible and persistent\u00a0 reference point, utilising their universal implications and existential\u00a0 extensions, Filippos Koutsaftis ultimately attempts to extrapolate and\u00a0 transcribe his material into an ontological horizon of reference, so that the\u00a0 portrait of the concrete and historical Elefsina is at the same time a portrait\u00a0 of a marginally symbolic and visionary Elefsina, a city that transcends\u00a0 geographical boundaries and constitutes the spiritual capital of the\u00a0 European and the Western world in general.<\/p>\n Can just one screen fit all the\u00a0 Mysteries of an entire year? From the\u00a0 colourful mosaic of Elefsina to the\u00a0 rural communities of Aspropyrgos\u00a0 and the manufacturing centres\u00a0 of Megara, a network of\u00a0mystae\u00a0<\/i>[initiates] began to set up and\u00a0 operate in West Attica. These are\u00a0 some of the most defining moments\u00a0 in their formation, always committed\u00a0 \u2013 and therefore decisive \u2013\u00a0to the\u00a0realisation of the artistic vision of\u00a0 2023 Eleusis.<\/p>\n Some of the most renowned and\u00a0 acclaimed contemporary creators\u00a0 came to Elefsina, experienced the\u00a0\u00a0energy of the place, and presented\u00a0 their works as confessions of this\u00a0 experience. \nthey noticed over time and how do they imagine the monuments of the future will look like? With the images they will record and the objects they will collect during the tour as their starting point, they will use collage and printmaking techniques to depict a utopian futuristic Elefsina. They will then digitally manipulate the images created, adding elements of typography, to produce a series of brochures for an archaeology of the future.
