{"id":46970,"date":"2023-09-14T13:32:05","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T10:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2023eleusis.eu\/i-eleysina-kentro-eikastikon-technon-gia-ton-septemvrio\/"},"modified":"2023-09-14T15:41:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T12:41:54","slug":"i-eleysina-kentro-eikastikon-technon-gia-ton-septemvrio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2023eleusis.eu\/en\/i-eleysina-kentro-eikastikon-technon-gia-ton-septemvrio\/","title":{"rendered":"Elefsina becomes the centre of visual arts in September!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Art exhibitions, participatory performances, screenings, installations and temporary interventions in public space, <\/strong><strong>featuring <\/strong><strong>international artists from all over the world<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This September, <strong>2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture <\/strong>gathers <strong>globally renowned artists from Europe to New York and Japan<\/strong> \u2013 with an emphasis, as always, on <strong>local artistic production \u2013<\/strong> and transforms Elefsina into <strong>a meeting point, a space for reflection and open dialogue for creators, visitors and the local community \u2013 a centre of visual arts. <\/strong>The painfully relevant <strong>installation<\/strong> by artist <strong>Athanasios Kanakis<\/strong> from Mandra, on the theme of the disastrous flood in 2017; a project by visual artist <strong>Jenny Marketou<\/strong> on <strong>water<\/strong> <strong>rights and hydropolitics<\/strong>; <strong>ten exciting nights of screenings and meetings <\/strong>in an open-air cinema, curated by <strong>Marina Fokidis;<\/strong> an exhibition by international artist <strong>Mariko<\/strong> <strong>Hori<\/strong>, who explores <strong>the relationship between language and the city<\/strong>; a <strong>lush garden<\/strong> flourishing in an <strong>abandoned industrial site<\/strong>; <strong>a performance and a temporary work \u2013 the end result of a series of participatory workshops \u2013 <\/strong>inspired by <strong>the rhythms and the shapes of the sea and the journey of the seeds <\/strong>by the<strong> EIGHT team<\/strong>. The work alludes to the <strong>historic, catastrophic 2017 flooding of the western suburbs of Attica<\/strong>, through its imprints <strong>of the personal experience of the artist and his family in his hometown and disaster-striken area, Mandra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong>13 to 24 September<\/strong>, the <strong>Elefsina Film Club<\/strong> hosts the screenings of <strong><em>Mystery 73 Cinema Paradise: Industries of Coexistence<\/em><\/strong> by curator and art theorist <strong>Marina Fokidis<\/strong>. For <strong>ten nights<\/strong>, the audience will have the chance to watch <strong>groundbreaking works of <\/strong><strong>video<\/strong> <strong>art<\/strong><strong>, documentaries and <\/strong><strong>film<\/strong> <strong>essays<\/strong> created by <strong>22 globally renowned artists from 12 countries<\/strong> and <strong>to engage with the creators themselves<\/strong> in a historical open-air cinema in the city, with a view of the sea. Among the works to be screened are a documentary created in collaboration with the <strong>shipbuilders\u2019 association<\/strong> <strong>at<\/strong> <strong>Gadani, Pakistan<\/strong>, the lost <strong><em>Atlantis<\/em><\/strong> by award-winning <strong>Ben<\/strong> <strong>Russell<\/strong>, the short film by <strong>Evi Kalogiropoulou<\/strong> starring <strong>Giorgos Mazonakis<\/strong>, which won a prize at the <strong>Cannes Festival<\/strong>, the legendary <strong><em>What<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Are<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>the<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Clouds<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>?<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Pier<\/strong> <strong>Paolo<\/strong> <strong>Pasolini<\/strong>, the <strong>journey of a container <\/strong>from Rotterdam to Los Angeles and Hong Kong by film theory guru <strong>Allan Sekula<\/strong>, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Saturday, 16 September<\/strong>, <strong>from 18.30<\/strong>, the results of the project <strong><em>Mystery 43 <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>School of Waves and Weed<\/em>s<\/strong> will be presented at the <strong>IRIS<\/strong> <strong>factory<\/strong>. Exploring the poetic and political interrelations between production, development, parasitism and inertia, the participatory workshops \u201cTogether, All Islands Make an Archipelago\u201d and \u201cSeeds and Weeds\u201d showcased <strong>local ecosystems and mutual support networks<\/strong>. Through interdisciplinary collaborations between scientists and artists, the <strong>EIGHT team<\/strong> put forward educational approaches that trace <strong>the rhythms and forms of the sea and the flights of seeds<\/strong>. At the IRIS Factory, a <strong>sound <\/strong><strong>walk<\/strong> will be presented, a <strong>video-artwork<\/strong> that stemmed from the workshops, as well as a <strong>participatory performance open to the public<\/strong>, which will attempt to create an <strong>ephemeral intervention<\/strong> with practices and materials that have been used during the workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously at the <strong>IRIS<\/strong> <strong>Factory, Brian Michaels&#8217;s <em>Mystery 200 Mythological Gardens <\/em>transforms<\/strong> <strong>an empty, deserted and abandoned space into a lush garden<\/strong> to <strong>revive<\/strong> <strong>the narrative of ancient Eleusis and ancient Greece<\/strong> as well as their connection with <strong>the city\u2019s recent and contemporary history<\/strong>. The garden, the core of the project, will be enriched with activities, <strong>soundscapes, performances and screenings<\/strong> curated by <strong>Brian<\/strong> <strong>Michaels<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Sozita<\/strong> <strong>Goudouna<\/strong> and <strong>Kate<\/strong> <strong>Peila<\/strong>. The opening will take place on<strong> Saturday, 16 September at 19.00<\/strong>, with a <strong>walking performance <\/strong>by <strong>Brian<\/strong> <strong>Michaels<\/strong> and <strong>Andreas Konstantinou<\/strong>, while the <strong>dreamy and ironic performance <\/strong><strong><em>A<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Crack<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Anna<\/strong> <strong>Furse<\/strong> will be presented on <strong>1 October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, from 16 September to 1 October<\/strong>, the exhibition of <strong><em>Mystery 42 <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Futuring<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Waters<\/em><\/strong>, a work created by <strong>artist and educator Jenny Marketou<\/strong>, who is based in New York, will be hosted at the <strong>Canteen art hub<\/strong>. Through a series of <strong>public<\/strong><strong> interdisciplinary<\/strong><strong> and<\/strong><strong> interartistic<\/strong><strong> meetings<\/strong> that took place from last May to June, the artist introduced <strong>young people, children and citizens of Elefsina and the wider region <\/strong><strong>to innovative ways to co-shape new potential socioecological futures with water as an active agent in the formulation of civil society and public space<\/strong>. The exhibition \u2013 the result of those meetings \u2013 includes <strong>installations<\/strong><strong>, videos, photographs <\/strong><strong>and artworks made from a variety of organic non-polluting materials,<\/strong> plasticine, fabric, paper as well as legumes, shells and oysters. <strong><em>Mystery<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> 42 Futuring Waters<\/em><\/strong> ends on <strong>Sunday, October<\/strong><strong> 1, <\/strong>with the <strong>presentation of the special publication<\/strong> <strong><em>A Speculative Manifesto for \u2013 and from \u2013 the Water of Elefsina<\/em><\/strong>, the product of onsite interdisciplinary research, featuring <strong>texts by the participants of the meetings and a comprehensive manifesto, a written declaration for the water rights of Elefsina<\/strong>, introducing the concept of <strong>nature as a legal entity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the framework of the same project, on <strong>Friday, 22 September <\/strong>at <strong>VLYCHA \u2013 Ship Graveyard<\/strong>, <strong>Marketou<\/strong> organizes a <strong>public sculptural intervention <\/strong>titled <strong><em>The<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Hatchery<\/em><\/strong> using <strong>tabby<\/strong><strong>, a mixture of shells, oysters, sand, algae and water<\/strong>. <em>The<\/em> <em>Hatchery<\/em> proposes a poetic interpretation of underwater habitats inspired by the architecture of oysters: a complex function that involves the <strong>purification of polluted waters<\/strong> and ensures the <strong>ecological well-being of seawater in an environmentally degraded area <\/strong>such as VLYCHA.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Saturday, 16 September<\/strong>, the exhibition <strong><em>Mystery 169 <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>If<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>the<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Wind<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Blows<\/em><\/strong> by the<strong> Japanese-born <\/strong>international visual artist<strong> Mariko Hori <\/strong>opens at the <strong>Elefsina Old Town Hall<\/strong>, with support of the <strong>EU-Japan<\/strong> <strong>Fest<\/strong>. Inspired by the Japanese proverb <strong>\u201cWhen the wind blows, the barrel maker gets rich,\u201d<\/strong> meaning than any event may lead to an unexpected outcome, the artists walked for a whole week around Elefsina and talked to its residents, asking them what would happen if the wind blew in their city. In tune with the city itself as well as with the current global situation, she attempted to reformulate this proverb by updating it and predicting the dynamics that 2023 Eleusis holds for the future. The <strong>new version of the proverb<\/strong> that Mariko Hori puts forth also begins with the words \u201cif the wind blows,\u201d but ends with a different sentence which <strong>reflects the modern world and the local character, following the narratives that evolve in-between. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <strong>flagship contemporary art event of 2023 Eleusis <\/strong>titled <strong><em>Mystery 3 Elefsina <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Mon<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Amour<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>: In Search of the Third Paradise<\/em><\/strong>, curated by <strong>Katerina Gregos<\/strong>, artistic director of the <strong>National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST),<\/strong> continues until the end of the month at the spaces of the <strong>Old Oil Mill Factory<\/strong> and the <strong>X<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>Bowling<\/strong> <strong>Art<\/strong>
